सिख पंथ के इतिहास में सरदार जस्सा सिंह रामगढ़िया (1723-1803) का नाम स्वर्ण अक्षरों में अंकित है। वह एक कुशल रणनीतिकार, निडर योद्धा और रामगढ़िया मिसल के शक्तिशाली प्रमुख थे। उन्हें ‘रामगढ़िया’ की उपाधि अमृतसर के प्रसिद्ध किले ‘राम रौणी’ (बाद में रामगढ़) के पुनर्निर्माण और रक्षा के कारण मिली थी।
प्रारंभिक जीवन
जस्सा सिंह का जन्म 1723 में लाहौर के पास ‘इचोगिल’ गांव में हुआ था। उनके पिता, भगवान सिंह, एक कुशल योद्धा थे और उनके दादा, हरदास सिंह, ने श्री गुरु गोबिंद सिंह जी से अमृत छककर सिख धर्म अपनाया था। विरासत में मिली बहादुरी और युद्ध कौशल ने जस्सा सिंह को बचपन से ही एक निपुण योद्धा बना दिया था।
सैनिक जीवन की शुरुआत
जस्सा सिंह ने अपना सैनिक जीवन मुगल शासन के दौरान शुरू किया था। उस समय सिखों पर भारी अत्याचार हो रहे थे। शुरू में उन्होंने जालंधर के फौजदार के यहाँ सेवा दी, लेकिन जब सिखों की धार्मिक अस्मिता पर बात आई, तो उन्होंने मुगल सेवा त्याग दी और खालसा पंथ की सेवा में जुट गए। उनकी निष्ठा सदैव गुरु घर और सिखों के प्रति रही।
रामगढ़िया मिसल और ‘रामगढ़‘ किला
सिखों ने अपनी सुरक्षा के लिए अमृतसर में एक कच्चा किला बनाया था जिसे ‘राम रौणी‘ कहा जाता था। 1748 में मुगलों ने इस किले को घेर लिया। उस कठिन समय में जस्सा सिंह ने अपनी चतुराई से किले के अंदर घिरे सिखों को बचाया और बाद में इस किले का विस्तार कर इसे एक मजबूत दुर्ग बनाया। उन्होंने इस किले का नाम ‘रामगढ़‘ रखा, जिसके कारण उनके जत्थे को ‘रामगढ़िया’ और उन्हें ‘रामगढ़िया सरदार’ कहा जाने लगा।
प्रमुख युद्ध और उपलब्धियां
जस्सा सिंह रामगढ़िया ने अहमद शाह अब्दाली जैसे क्रूर आक्रमणकारियों के खिलाफ कई युद्ध लड़े। उनकी सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धियों में से एक थी 1783 में दिल्ली पर विजय। जस्सा सिंह रामगढ़िया, जस्सा सिंह आहलूवालिया और बघेल सिंह के नेतृत्व में सिख सेनाओं ने लाल किले पर कब्जा कर लिया था।
- दिल्ली की मुगल गद्दी: जस्सा सिंह रामगढ़िया लाल किले से उस पत्थर के तख्त (मुगल सिंहासन) को उखाड़कर अमृतसर ले आए थे, जिस पर बैठकर मुगल सम्राट सिखों के खिलाफ आदेश जारी करते थे। यह तख्त आज भी अमृतसर के ‘रामगढ़िया बुंगा’ में सुरक्षित है।
- क्षेत्र विस्तार: उन्होंने अपने शासनकाल में बारी दोआब और जालंधर दोआब के कई इलाकों पर कब्जा किया। बटाला, कलानौर और कादियान उनके प्रमुख केंद्र थे।

जस्सा सिंह केवल एक योद्धा ही नहीं थे, बल्कि वे वास्तुकला और निर्माण कार्यों में भी रुचि रखते थे। उन्होंने अमृतसर में ‘रामगढ़िया बुंगा‘ का निर्माण करवाया, जो दो ऊंचे मीनारों वाला एक विशाल भवन है। यह स्थान युद्ध के समय रणनीति बनाने और सिखों के ठहरने के काम आता था।
स्वभाव और व्यक्तित्व
जस्सा सिंह रामगढ़िया अपने वचन के पक्के और न्यायप्रिय शासक थे। उनकी वीरता का लोहा दुश्मन भी मानते थे। वे ‘सिख मिसल’ प्रणाली के एक स्तंभ थे और उन्होंने दल खालसा को मजबूत करने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। यद्यपि समय-समय पर अन्य मिसलों (जैसे सुकरचकिया मिसल) के साथ उनके मतभेद भी रहे, लेकिन जब भी धर्म पर संकट आया, वे हमेशा आगे रहे।
